Spoils
This work was made whilst on residency at Casa Lu in Mexico City in 2023. It looks to navigate the complex interplay between food and human desire, pleasure, and the looming threat of contamination inherent in our complex relationship with food. Through the genre of Still Life, this work challenges conventional perspectives on food by delving into its multifaceted identity, transcending its utilitarian role to become a powerful carrier of intimate emotional narratives.
At the core lies an exploration of desire, both sensual and visceral. I seek to employ my lens to capture the seductive allure of food, inviting viewers into a realm where flavours and textures become a conduit for unspoken yearnings. These photographs celebrate the sensorial pleasure derived from my travels and experiences whilst in Mexico. The theme of decay emerges as a central motif transforming the still life compositions into visual reflections on the transient nature of culinary pleasures and the visceral experience of Mexican food culture. The work confronts the paradox of pleasure and disgust, acknowledging the societal norms and personal conflicts that can accompany our relationship with certain foods, prompting viewers to reflect on the origins of these emotions and their impact on our individual and collective psyches.
